Fondation Mérieux
Created in 1967 by Doctor Charles Mérieux, and granted charity status by the French Government in 1976, Fondation Mérieux, chaired by Alain Mérieux, has established a mission to fight infectious diseases affecting developing countries. The Foundation works to develop and make available new and affordable approaches, based on biology, in the field of prevention, diagnostics and therapeutics.
To achieve its goals, Fondation Mérieux acts as a major catalyst in the field of research and development through the mobilization of the world's foremost scientific expertise and by creating a network for excellence.
It fosters the dissemination of scientific information and innovation through international seminars and conferences.
Foundation Mérieux develops high level scientific training programs for local health practitioners. It strengthens and builds local health infrastructures in the field, and provides the means for sustainable development.
Fondation Mérieux initiated and financed in 1999 the establishment of a P4 research laboratory, managed by INSERM. The "Jean Mérieux" laboratory, located in Lyon Gerland, follows the strictest international standards on biological security and enables international research teams to work on dangerous and little known pathogenic agents.
